Quintana Roo rolls out tourism safeguards and sustainability plans as sargazo and low hotel occupancy hit the region

The government of Quintana Roo expanded a parametric insurance scheme for coral reefs in Puerto Morelos and Cozumel, allowing funds to be released within days after a hurricane to support rapid reef restoration.

The Caribbean Mexican Hotel Council, together with federal and state tourism ministries, approved an emergency plan to counter the massive sargazo influx. The plan targets four pillars: restoring air connectivity, boosting international promotion, short‑term beach cleaning, and protecting tourism‑linked jobs. Hotel occupancy in Cancun during the 2026 World Cup fell to about 56%, prompting urgent action.

Isla Mujeres launched the "Rutas Mágicas de Color" program, repainting more than 50 façades to refresh the island’s tourist image, while a new Izla by Fiesta Americana hotel opened to meet rising visitor demand.

Hyatt announced two premium all‑inclusive projects in Mexico—Park Hyatt Riviera Maya and Grand Hyatt Los Cabos—scheduled to open in the second half of 2026, expanding luxury accommodation in the region.

The Cancún Tourism Circular initiative, backed by the local hotel association and the nonprofit Sustentur, aims to cut plastic and glass waste by up to 25%, targeting 45 hotels and an investment of roughly 11 million pesos, with a goal of reducing 200 tonnes of plastic and 100 tonnes of glass by 2028.
