Mexico's Sedatu seeks land for 400,000 welfare housing units

The Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu) is looking for additional land to complete the "Vivienda para el Bienestar" program, which still needs sites for about 400,000 homes out of the 1.8 million planned for the current six‑year term. Sedatu says it already has territorial reserves for most of the target, with over 600,000 homes ready to build, but high land costs in the State of Mexico, Mexico City and Jalisco require new mechanisms such as using unused federal properties from agencies like the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport and partnering with ejidatarios and communal landowners. Edna Vega Rangel, Sedatu’s head, emphasized that the agency is pursuing these options without expropriating ejido land.

In the municipality of Querétaro, mayor Héctor Magaña Rentería confirmed that the local portion of the program remains active despite an amparo filed by the Ejido of Tequisquiapan. A judge has suspended work on the disputed site, but the project will continue in the original location if the court permits, or be moved to another parcel with the support of the National Housing Commission. Magaña reiterated the municipal commitment to deliver welfare housing to families unable to buy on the open market.
