Mexico's Sedena marks 205 years of institutional transformation

General Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, head of Mexico’s Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), marked the 205th anniversary of the institution's founding, originally established as the Secretariat of War and Navy on October 4, 1821. During a ceremony at the Plaza de la Lealtad, Trevilla Trejo emphasized the ongoing transformation of the Mexican Armed Forces to meet modern national needs.

The Secretary highlighted the evolution of the institution, noting its historical role in defending sovereignty during 19th-century foreign interventions and its reorganization following the Mexican Revolution. He specifically mentioned the 1937 name change to the Secretariat of National Defense to better define the concept of defense versus war.

Additionally, the ceremony recognized the contributions of the Army, Air Force, and National Guard. Trevilla Trejo noted the importance of the Plan DN-III-E, a disaster relief mechanism that has provided humanitarian aid both domestically and internationally on 99 occasions.
