Mexico's Sefader conducts house‑to‑house campaign against gusano barrenador in Huajuapan

The Secretariat of Agro‑Food Promotion and Rural Development (Sefader) launched a door‑to‑door prevention campaign in the El Carmen agency of Huajuapan de León, Oaxaca. Teams of veterinarians and local officials visited households to deworm pets and livestock, treat wounds and advise families on protecting animals from the invasive gusano barrenador fly.

Sefader Secretary Víctor López Leyva highlighted that regular deworming and wound checks are key to stopping the pest, which deposits eggs in animal injuries. The campaign is part of a broader effort that includes the recently inaugurated sterile‑fly production plant in Metapa de Domínguez, Chiapas – a binational project with the United States that will release 100 million sterile flies weekly to interrupt the insect’s life cycle and protect national livestock.

The brigades will continue to patrol agencies and neighborhoods in Huajuapan, urging residents to allow identified personnel to inspect and treat their animals, thereby helping to curb the spread of the infestation.
