Dominican Republic education audit finds no irregularities under former minister

An audit by the Cámara de Cuentas of the Dominican Republic's Ministry of Education (MINERD) covering the period from August 2020 to August 2022 found no evidence of irregularities in the management of former minister Roberto Fulcar. The report instead focused on observations and recommendations for improvement, particularly regarding procurement processes, inventory management, and administrative documentation. Fulcar responded by stating that the identified institutional weaknesses were inherited and have since been addressed.

The audit also highlighted deficiencies in the rehabilitation of school facilities, noting delays and incomplete documentation in various construction contracts.

Simultaneously, the Dominican Association of Teachers (ADP) reported that 237 public schools were unable to begin the 2026-2027 school year due to infrastructure problems, including unfinished works and lack of basic services. This has led to tensions between the ADP and MINERD, as the union has unilaterally reduced class hours in some regions to protest these conditions, a move the Ministry claims violates the official school calendar.
