Claudia Sheinbaum defends Mexico's audience rights proposal

President Claudia Sheinbaum has introduced the "Lineamientos Generales para la Protección de los Derechos de las Audiencias," a set of regulations intended to safeguard the public’s right to accurate information. Sheinbaum says the measure defends freedom of expression and links liberty to wellbeing, arguing that a well‑informed citizenry is essential for social welfare.

The proposal has sparked sharp criticism. PAN deputy Federico Döring accused the government and the ruling Morena party of using the rules to censor journalists and protect politicians linked to crime. Morena officials, however, insist the lineamientos do not silence media voices but merely aim to prevent misinformation and ensure audiences can distinguish news from opinion. A public consultation on the draft is currently under way.

During a visit to Oaxaca, Sheinbaum defended former governor Alejandro Murat, prompting a vocal protest and chants of “abucheos” from locals. The same event featured the inauguration of a new IMSS regional hospital in San Lorenzo Cacaotepec, a 530‑bed facility that Sheinbaum highlighted as part of her broader social agenda.
