Claudia Sheinbaum attends World Cup 2026 final and pushes T‑MEC trade talks
Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, traveled to New York‑New Jersey for the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, where Spain defeated Argentina. She joined U.S. President Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, FIFA president Gianni Infantino and Spain’s King Felipe VI on the stadium’s main podium. She publicly praised Spain’s victory, highlighted Mexico’s role as the best host among the three‑nation tournament, and described the event as a celebration of unity and cooperation.
During the ceremony Sheinbaum used the occasion to hold brief, informal talks with Trump and Carney about the North‑American trade pact. She emphasized Mexico’s aim to secure stable, multi‑year agreements under the revised T‑MEC, avoid annual renegotiations, and seek reductions in U.S. tariffs on steel, aluminium and autos. The president noted that discussions also involved senior U.S. officials on commerce and security.
Analysts project that the World Cup will generate a $2.5‑$4 billion economic spill‑over for Mexico, concentrated in host cities such as Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey. While the tournament boosts tourism and temporary jobs, experts caution the boost will not sustainably accelerate national growth.
