Mexico's SSPC Issues Digital Safety Guidelines on Infinite Scroll Risks

The Secretaría de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana (SSPC) through its Unit of Intelligence, Cyber Investigation and Technological Operations released a set of recommendations to curb the dangers of the “infinite scroll” practice on digital platforms. The agency warned that algorithms prioritize highly interactive content, often amplifying emotionally charged posts that showcase luxury, wealth and social prestige, which can be hijacked by cyber‑criminals to lure young users with narratives that glorify illicit activities. To mitigate manipulation, disinformation and undue influence, the SSPC advised frequent conversations with children and adolescents about online content, diversification of information sources toward educational and cultural material, scheduled periods of digital disconnection, permanent configuration of privacy, security and parental‑control tools, verification of information before sharing, and the creation of safe spaces for dialogue about digital experiences. The agency also highlighted its “Ciberguía” guide as a resource for strengthening digital self‑care and responsible platform use.
