Mexico's SSPC warns of rising tourism and travel package fraud

Mexico’s Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) has issued warnings regarding increasing tourism fraud involving fake travel packages and vacation offers. Cybercriminals are utilizing social engineering techniques to create a sense of urgency through phrases such as “last spots available” or “exclusive price” to pressure victims into making immediate payments.

Authorities noted that criminals are now leveraging artificial intelligence to create highly convincing fraudulent content, including fake agencies, professional-looking websites, automated conversations, and authentic-looking reviews and images. These scams are frequently distributed via social media, online advertisements, and messaging applications.

To mitigate risks, the SSPC recommends that consumers verify the legal name, address, and contact information of travel agencies and consult references with the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (PROFECO). Officials advise against clicking reservation links sent via messaging apps or email, suggesting instead that users navigate directly to official websites. Additionally, consumers should be wary of requests for immediate bank transfers to personal accounts.
