Mexico sees record low homicide rates in July 2026
The national homicide rate fell to 21.4 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2025, a 16.6 % drop from 2024, according to INEGI. Total homicides in Mexico in 2025 were 27,989, the lowest figure since 2016.
In July 2026 the country recorded 1,213 homicides, 45.2 % of which were concentrated in six states: Chihuahua (104), Sinaloa (99), Guanajuato (95), Baja California (91), Estado de México (85) and Michoacán (74). Nuevo León posted a historic low of 26 homicides, a rate of 0.40 per 100,000, the safest July in two decades. The Estado de México logged 85 homicides, keeping its monthly total among the lowest in recent years. Chihuahua reported 850 homicide victims year‑to‑date, a 44 % reduction since 2021, while Tijuana saw 68 homicides in July, a 29.9 % decline from the same month in 2025. The Mando Unificado program in the Estado de México has cut homicides by 35 % year‑to‑date, according to state authorities.
