Mexico homicide rate drops to 21.4 per 100,000 in 2025
Mexico’s national homicide rate fell to 21.4 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2025, down from 25.8 the previous year, marking the lowest level since 2016. The Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía (INEGI) recorded 27,989 homicides in 2025, a 16.6% decline from 33,550 in 2024.

In the State of Mexico, the Mando Unificado program reduced homicides by 35% between March 2025 and July 2026.
Analysts attribute the decline to coordinated security strategies involving federal, state and municipal forces, increased intelligence work, and large‑scale weapon seizures. While the overall trend is downward, some states such as Sinaloa and Baja California Sur still record higher rates, indicating persistent regional disparities.
