Mexico's Supreme Court marks one year with declining sentence rates

The Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) in Mexico has completed its first year under its new integration. While Chief Justice Hugo Aguilar Ortiz reported that the Court resolved 13,231 matters—representing 88 percent of received files—critics note that the majority of these, over 10,000, were concluded through administrative agreements rather than formal sentences.

Data indicates a decline in judicial output regarding formal rulings. The new integration issued 2,059 sentences during its first year, a decrease of approximately 35 percent compared to a previous comparable period which saw 3,174 sentences. Analysts suggest that while reducing case backlogs is important, the primary function of a constitutional court is to resolve constitutional problems and protect rights rather than focusing on administrative file closures.
