Mexico's Telecom Regulator Extends Mobile Phone Registration Deadline

Mexico's Comisión Reguladora de Telecomunicaciones (CRT) announced a six‑month extension of the deadline for mobile‑phone users to link their lines to a CURP, a move disclosed eleven hours before the full board formally voted on it. The provisional measure, discussed in an extraordinary session on 25 June, aims to prevent a massive deactivation of lines that had not been registered by the original 30 June deadline.

The new schedule assigns registration windows by the final digit of each phone number: numbers ending in 4 must register by 15 October, 5 by 31 October, 6 by 15 November, 7 by 30 November, 8 by 15 December and 9 by 31 December. Users who fail to register risk a 72‑hour suspension of service, leaving only emergency calls operational. At the time of the announcement, roughly 63 million of the 152.5 million mobile lines in Mexico – about 41 % – had been registered.
