Mexico's telecom regulator warns of service cuts if phone lines not registered

The Federal Telecommunications Regulator (CRT) announced that mobile phones lacking the required registration will lose most functions after the deadline at the end of June. Only emergency calls to 911 and risk notifications will remain active. President Claudia Sheinbaum said about 50 % of users have complied and urged the rest to register before the cut‑off, noting a possible extension will be decided on 25 June.

If a line is disconnected, apps that rely on mobile data—such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and banking apps that send one‑time passwords via SMS—will become unusable unless the device connects to a fixed Wi‑Fi network. The measure aims to enforce a new federal regulation and avoid wider disruptions to digital services.

The deadline for registration is 30 June, after which the “partial blackout” of phone functions will begin on 1 July unless the schedule is altered.
