Mexico's Tienditas Face Greater Threat from Oxxo Chain Than Crime

A recent report highlights that Mexico's small neighborhood stores, known as tienditas, are losing more business to the expanding Oxxo convenience‑store chain than to insecurity, according to Grupo Ollamani. The firm warned of continued losses into the third quarter.

The same analysis notes a broader economic backdrop: consumer confidence has fallen for 19 consecutive months, while auto sales rose 5 % in the first seven months of the year, driven by Chinese brands such as Geely and MG Motor. Export values reached a historic high for the January‑June period, and a Banxico‑cited survey identified insecurity as the top obstacle for business activity, outranking corruption and rule‑of‑law concerns.
