Mexico's World Cup win sparks Guadalajara traffic jam and capital's Hoy No Circula restrictions
On June 24, 2026, the Mexican national soccer team defeated the Czech Republic in a World Cup group match. The victory sparked massive celebrations in Guadalajara, where crowds filled streets around the stadium and caused severe congestion on the city's main avenues.
In response to the expected surge in traffic, the Hoy No Circula program was enforced in Mexico City and the State of Mexico. Vehicles with a red sticker, hologram 1 or 2 and plate numbers ending in 3 or 4 were barred from circulating between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m., while electric, hybrid, emergency and other exempt vehicles were allowed to move freely. The restriction applied to all 16 boroughs of the capital and 18 adjacent municipalities.
