Mexico's Youth Mobilize Over 500,000 for National Tequios and Peace Shorts

On 29 July, more than half a million young Mexicans participated simultaneously in the Jornada Nacional de Tequios por la Transformación y Cortos por la Paz, a coordinated civic‑service event held in all 32 states. Activities ranged from cleaning parks and streets, rehabilitating sports courts, planting trees, painting murals and benches, to recording short “peace” videos. The Instituto Mexicano de la Juventud (IMJUVE) organized the mobilization through its Comités de Jóvenes por la Transformación, enlisting volunteers from the Jóvenes Construyendo el Futuro programme.

Over 450 short videos have been collected so far, showcasing participants’ reflections on peace and community. The initiative is part of the broader "Jóvenes Transformando México" strategy promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum and echoed by local officials such as Deputy Zaira Cedillo Silva, who announced the rehabilitation of three boxing arenas in Ecatepec as a complementary activity. Municipalities across the country, including Ahome (reforestation at Parque Los Naranjos at 08:00) and Piedras Negras (clean‑up of the Plaza del Ejido at 09:00), joined the nationwide effort.
