Meyer RE to modernize Frisia I ferry with hybrid propulsion

Meyer RE has secured a contract to modernize the island ferry Frisia I for AG Reederei Norden-Frisia. The project involves converting the vessel, which first entered service in 1970, to a diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system.

The new technical configuration will replace the existing diesel generators with a 1,200 kWh battery system. While the two Schottel drives will be powered by more efficient diesel engines, the central propeller will transition to an electric drive. This setup is expected to reduce fuel consumption by more than 40 percent and lower CO2 emissions by up to 400 tons annually. Charging for the battery system is intended to come primarily from the shipping company’s photovoltaic installations.

In addition to the engine overhaul, the passenger salon will undergo a comprehensive renovation, including new interior design, LED lighting, and updated electrical and network technology. The total investment for the hybridization and salon renovation is approximately 10 million euros, with roughly 2.5 million euros in funding provided by the German Federal Ministry of Transport through the “Sustainable Modernization of Coastal Ships” (NaMKü) program.

Work is scheduled to begin in September 2027 and conclude by March 1, 2028. Following the modernization, the Frisia I will resume ferry services between Norddeich and Norderney.
