Meyer Werft explores MSC Cruises investment and hydrogen energy project
MSC Cruises is reportedly in discussions to acquire a state-held equity stake in the German shipyard Meyer Werft. This potential strategic partnership aims to provide the historic, family-owned enterprise with long-term financial stability and economic security. For MSC Cruises, the move represents a vertical integration strategy intended to guarantee construction capacity for future fleet expansions and secure access to advanced ship design and green technologies.
Separately, Meyer Werft has joined the H2MASS (Hydrogen for Cruise Shipping) project, a research initiative focused on developing hydrogen energy systems for large passenger ships. In collaboration with Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, Helmut Schmidt University, and Carnival Maritime GmbH, the project aims to create a metal hydride hydrogen storage system. This technology is designed to provide a climate-friendly energy supply during port stays, reducing emissions by replacing conventional onboard power generation while vessels are alongside.
