MFG Oberösterreich calls for stronger democratic protections
On the International Day of Democracy, the MFG Oberösterreich political party emphasized the necessity of dissent, opposition, and citizen participation for a functioning democratic system. Joachim Aigner, the party's state chairman, stated that democracy requires protecting fundamental rights, including freedom of opinion and assembly, even when they are politically inconvenient.
The party highlighted the legal case of assembly organizer Peter Schutte as an example of the struggle for civil rights. Schutte had organized a rally regarding peace and neutrality at Vienna's Heldenplatz in November 2024. Following police restrictions that hindered access to and exit from the site, Schutte filed a complaint. While a lower administrative court initially rejected his claim, the Constitutional Court overturned that decision on July 1, 2026, ruling in his favor.
