MG may become next automaker to support Apple Car Key

Code discovered in Apple’s backend suggests the company is preparing to expand its Apple Car Key support to include vehicles from MG, a brand owned by China’s SAIC Motor. The Apple Car Key feature allows drivers to use an iPhone or Apple Watch to lock, unlock, and start compatible vehicles via Apple Wallet, replacing traditional physical key fobs.

Advanced implementations of this technology utilize Bluetooth and Ultra Wideband to recognize a user’s presence as they approach the vehicle. The system follows the Digital Key 3.0 standard developed by the Car Connectivity Consortium, which enables digital keys to be shared with others and revoked remotely.

MG has grown significantly in Europe, particularly in the UK, driven by its electric vehicle lineup. While the backend code indicates upcoming support, it does not specify which MG models will be compatible or provide a definitive rollout timeline.
