MG Motor to open first European EV factory in Galicia, Spain

Chinese automaker SAIC's MG Motor, now the leading Chinese electric‑vehicle brand in Europe, announced a €200 million investment to build its first production plant in the Galician region of north‑west Spain. Construction is slated to start in 2027 with the factory expected to be operational by the end of 2028. The facility will have an annual output of up to 120,000 vehicles and create about 2,300 jobs, consolidating research, component manufacturing and logistics on a single site.

MG Motor reached a milestone of one million cars delivered in Europe and sold more than 300,000 EVs in 2025, overtaking rival BYD. By producing "in Europe, for Europe" the company aims to bypass import logistics and political tensions, benefiting from the EU's zero‑tariff regime for electric cars. The brand, originally British, is now owned by SAIC Motor and is positioning its Spanish plant as a hub for affordable electric compact cars and family‑friendly SUVs in the European market.
