National Probation Inspectorate Director resigns after fatal domestic violence case
The Director of the National Probation Inspectorate, Viorel Sochircă, has resigned following a fatal incident in Măgdăcești, where a man shot his wife and subsequently committed suicide. The victim had been under a protection order, and the perpetrator was required to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet. However, the bracelet was not found at the crime scene, and authorities are investigating when and why the signal ceased to transmit.
Justice Minister Vladislav Cojuhari stated that the tragedy revealed critical failures in the electronic monitoring system, citing resource deficits, procedural gaps, and a lack of real-time data sharing between the Probation Inspectorate, Police, and Border Police. The perpetrator had reportedly left the country on August 25 and returned shortly before the incident.
In response, the Ministry of Justice plans to propose that the General Police Inspectorate be granted direct access to the monitoring system to allow for faster intervention. Additionally, officials are considering recommending that family aggressors be flagged at border crossings, even if they do not have an explicit ban on leaving the country. The National Probation Inspectorate has launched an internal investigation to examine the handling of the case and the functionality of the surveillance equipment.
