MH370 satellite data provides key clues for search efforts

More than 12 years after Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 disappeared while traveling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, investigators continue to rely on critical satellite data to narrow the search area. The aircraft, carrying 239 people, vanished on March 8, 2014, and has yet to be located.

Official safety investigation reports from Malaysia indicate that the aircraft's SATCOM system made seven automatic connections with satellites after losing contact with air traffic control. The seventh and final connection, initiated by the aircraft itself at 00:19 UTC on March 8, 2014, is considered a key piece of evidence.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) refers to the resulting data path as the ‘seventh arc.’ This arc represents a curve of potential locations in the Indian Ocean based on the time delay of the signal between the aircraft and the Inmarsat satellite. The arc spans from approximately 20° South to 40° South. Analysis of frequency shifts during this final communication suggests the aircraft may have been descending rapidly, likely due to fuel exhaustion, as it reached this arc.
