MHP holds workshop on demographic transformation and aging population
The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) held a workshop titled ‘Demographic Transformation and Aging Population Policies in the Turkish and Century of Türkiye’ at its headquarters. The event, organized by the party’s Family, Women, and Social Services Policy department, included participation from deputy chairmen, members of parliament, and academics.
MHP Deputy Chairman Ahmet Selim Yurdakul noted that the elderly population in Turkey has reached 9,583,000 people, accounting for 11.1% of the total population. This marks the first time the elderly demographic has entered double digits. Yurdakul highlighted that the total fertility rate has dropped to 1.42.
The workshop addressed the economic, social, and strategic consequences of an aging population, including a shrinking labor supply, challenges to social security stability, increased demand for long-term healthcare, and potential impacts on national security and strategic human resources. The program was the result of four months of preparation involving 80 scientists, academics, and researchers working across eight specialized study groups.
