MHRA unveils 2030 strategy focused on AI and patient safety

The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has unveiled its 2030 strategy, prioritizing patient safety, artificial intelligence (AI) regulation, and precision medicine. The agency aims to establish a clear benefit and risk framework by 2027 and plans to launch an MHRA Centre for AI and Digital Health to manage the regulation of AI-driven medical products.

In the broader biotech sector, AI is significantly accelerating drug discovery timelines, though regulatory processes remain a critical bottleneck. While AI can generate vast amounts of data rapidly, drugs must still undergo rigorous human clinical trials overseen by agencies like the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Industry leaders note that while technology compresses discovery phases, the transition through Phase 1, 2, and 3 trials remains the primary determinant of biotech value and regulatory approval.
