Hungary's public media body candidate selection faces delays
The selection process for the Independent Public Media Body (Független Közmédia Testület) has faced significant delays and political friction. The Hungarian Parliament's Culture Committee recently postponed the scheduled hearing of media professional candidates following objections from several organizations regarding the legitimacy and predictability of the nomination procedure.
Political parties have begun announcing their nominees for the new regulatory bodies. Fidesz has nominated media professional Beatrix Siklósi to the Independent Public Media Body and László Szabó to the National Media and Communications Council. Mi Hazánk Mozgalom has nominated Zoltán Moys to the Public Media Body and Máté Tóth to the Media Council.
The new structure, established under recent media law amendments, will consist of a seven-member Independent Public Media Body with three members appointed by the governing party, three by the opposition, and three by professional media organizations. The body will exercise ownership rights over Duna Médiaszolgáltató, Magyar Rádió, Televízió, and MTVA.
