MI5 warns UK universities of Chinese espionage via research institute

MI5, the UK's domestic intelligence agency, has issued an unprecedented security alert warning that the China General Technology Research Institute (CGTRI) is acting as a front for the Chinese Ministry of State Security (MSS). The agency stated that the institute's primary purpose is to fund academic research that directly enhances China's technical capabilities for espionage.

According to MI5, more than 100 academics with links to UK institutions have contributed to projects funded by CGTRI. These research areas include sensitive technologies such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, covert communications systems, and steganography. MI5 noted that many researchers may have engaged with the institute in good faith without realizing its connection to Chinese intelligence services.

UK Security Minister Dan Jarvis has written to university vice-chancellors, instructing them to ensure staff end all arrangements with the institute. Officials warned that continued collaboration could lead to prosecution under the UK National Security Act 2023. Beijing has previously dismissed similar espionage allegations as unfounded and fabricated.
