MI5 warns UK academics of Chinese intelligence funding links
MI5 has issued an unprecedented espionage alert warning that more than 100 academics with links to United Kingdom institutions have contributed to research projects funded by the China General Technology Research Institute (CGTRI). The agency identifies CGTRI, also known as the China Academy of General Technology, as a front for China’s Ministry of State Security (MSS).
According to MI5, the primary objective of CGTRI is to fund academic research that directly enhances the technical espionage capabilities of the MSS. The research areas involved include artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, steganography, and covert communications systems. MI5 noted that in some instances, researchers may have been unaware that their work was being financed by the MSS through CGTRI.
UK academic institutions are being urged to review ongoing collaborations and trace funding sources to ensure they are not inadvertently assisting foreign intelligence services. The agency cautioned that continued collaboration could result in prosecution under the National Security Act 2023. The Chinese embassy in the UK has rejected the allegations, calling them ‘imaginary and purely fabricated’ and stating they have lodged formal representations.
