MI5 warns UK universities of Chinese intelligence infiltration

The British security service MI5 has issued an unprecedented security alert to UK university vice-chancellors and researchers regarding potential espionage and infiltration by Chinese intelligence structures.

Central to the warning is the China General Technology Research Institute (CGTRI). While formally presented as a sponsor for scientific projects, British intelligence identifies the entity as a direct cover for Beijing’s Ministry of State Security. MI5 reports that over one hundred British academics have collaborated on research projects funded by this organization, often in good faith.

The targeted research areas involve highly strategic sectors, including artificial intelligence, dual-use civilian and military technologies, and computer data analysis. Peter Mathieson, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh and international security lead for Universities UK, noted that the explicit declaration by security services necessitates a significant shift in how institutions approach these collaborations.
