Mia Amor Mottley calls for Caribbean peace zone and rejects Cuba blockade

During the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley called for the Caribbean to be established as an indisputable ‘zone of peace’. She rejected the use of unilateral and unjustified force within the region.

Mottley expressed strong opposition to the blockade and coercive measures against Cuba, highlighting the increasing humanitarian pressures faced by the Cuban people. She noted that restrictions on trade, finance, and fuel access deepen hardships for citizens, students, and residents. The Prime Minister emphasized Barbados' long-standing position of opposing such measures in favor of dialogue, sovereign equality, and respect for international law.

Additionally, Mottley addressed challenges facing small island developing states, including climate change and debt costs. She also warned of a global ‘crisis of responsibility’ regarding the rapid development of artificial intelligence, advocating for a universal human framework to govern the technology.
