Serbian players see mixed results in US Open qualifying
Serbian tennis players saw mixed results during the opening rounds of the US Open qualifying tournament.
Mia Ristić secured a career-defining victory in her Grand Slam qualifying debut, defeating American Ajla Akli 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 after two hours and 18 minutes of play. Ristić, currently ranked 195th in the world, advances to the second round to face Portugal’s Francisca Jorge.
Dušan Lajović also moved forward in the qualifying draw after South Korean Sun-Woo Kwon retired during the third set with the score at 4-6, 7-5, 3-1. Lajović is scheduled to play Horacio Ezecha in the next round. Lola Radivojević secured her place in the qualifying semifinals by defeating Sweden’s Rinalda Person 6-4, 6-3.
However, not all Serbian representatives were successful. Laslo Djere was eliminated in the first round after losing 7-5, 6-0 to France’s Alexandre Muller. Additionally, Teodora Kostović fell in the qualifying rounds after a hard-fought match against a Dutch opponent.
