Miami claims No. 1 in historic AP Top 25 college football shakeup

The AP Top 25 college football rankings underwent a historic shakeup following Week 7, marking the first time in the poll’s 90-year history that five of the top seven teams lost on a single Saturday. This volatility resulted in all 25 ranked teams moving to different positions in the standings.

Miami (FL) ascended to the No. 1 spot for the first time since 2002 after a 43-25 double-overtime victory against Florida State. This marks the first time in nearly six seasons that a team from outside the SEC or Big Ten has held the top ranking.

The Big 12 conference saw significant representation in the top 10, with BYU, Texas Tech, and Utah all securing spots. BYU made a major impact by defeating No. 2 Notre Dame 28-24, moving up six spots to No. 2. Other notable movements include Houston rising to No. 14 and Florida re-entering the poll at No. 20. Conversely, Texas experienced a significant drop, falling 12 spots to No. 19.
