Miami-Dade County adopts American flamingo as its official bird

The Miami‑Dade County Commission voted on 21 July 2026 to designate the American flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) as the county’s official bird. The resolution highlights the species’ ecological recovery in South Florida, its historic and cultural ties to the region, and its role in tourism and local identity. County commissioner Natalie Milian Orbis said, "By making it the official bird we recognize a species that is part of our history and celebrate a worldwide symbol.", while conservationist Ron Magill noted the bird illustrates how nature can return when given a chance.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission now classifies the flamingo as a native species, marking a shift from earlier assumptions that wild sightings were escaped captive birds. The designation aims to strengthen protection efforts as flamingo populations rebound after near‑local extinction in the 19th century.

The move follows decades of the bird’s use in Miami‑Dade’s branding, appearing on signs, souvenirs, hotel décor and promotional materials, cementing its status as a regional emblem.
