Miami exile communities face voting dilemma ahead of midterms

As midterm elections approach on November 3, the Cuban and Venezuelan exile communities in Miami face a political dilemma. While many supporters initially welcomed Donald Trump’s hardline stance against the governments in Cuba and Venezuela, shifting priorities are emerging.

Guillermo Grenier, a sociology professor at Florida International University and director of the Cuba Poll, notes that while the situation in Cuba remains a major issue, it is being overshadowed by economic concerns and immigration. The communities have expressed apprehension regarding mass deportations and raids in neighborhoods like Little Havana and Doral, the latter of which has seen business closures due to fear.

Additionally, the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans has impacted community trust. Voters are balancing their desire for strong foreign policy against the immediate domestic impacts of immigration enforcement and rising costs, such as gasoline prices.
