Dwyane Wade statue receives facial redesign after public criticism

The Miami Heat have unveiled an updated version of the Dwyane Wade statue located outside the Kaseya Center. The modification focuses exclusively on the sculpture’s head, which has been redesigned to better reflect the likeness of the Hall of Fame basketball player.

The original statue, unveiled in October 2024, faced widespread criticism from fans and media for bearing little resemblance to Wade. Public reaction included numerous memes and jokes comparing the sculpture to other figures. Wade addressed the situation in an essay, stating that he consented to the changes after realizing the monument carries significant meaning for the Miami community.

Original sculptors Omri Amrany and Oscar León were brought back to perform the redesign. The work was completed in secret, with a plywood box used to conceal the installation process. The statue depicts Wade’s iconic 2009 celebration against the Chicago Bulls, where he jumped onto a courtside table and declared, “This is my house.”
