Miami to build Plaza Azúcar in Little Havana to honor Celia Cruz

The City of Miami has announced the construction of Plaza Azúcar, a new cultural space in the Little Havana neighborhood dedicated to the life and musical legacy of Cuban singer Celia Cruz. Located along the historic Calle Ocho corridor, the plaza aims to serve as a cultural destination for the local Cuban immigrant community.

The project will feature a large-scale monumental sculpture designed by artist Alex Kaufman. As part of the tribute, authorities plan to unveil a recreation of Cruz’s voice using artificial intelligence technology. Omer Pardillo, the representative of the singer’s artistic estate, will participate in the presentation.

The announcement coincides with what would have been the 101st birthday of the artist. The tribute follows Cruz’s 2024 recognition as the first Afro-Latina artist to be featured on a United States 25-cent coin through the American Women Quarters program.
