Miami voters to decide fate of historic Marine Stadium
Miami voters will decide this Tuesday whether to allow the city to enter a partnership with a private company to restore the Miami Marine Stadium. Located on Virginia Key, the 6,500-seat venue is a landmark of midcentury Brutalist architecture designed by Cuban refugee Hilario Candela.
Opened in 1963, the stadium served as the nation’s only powerboat racing venue and hosted notable cultural and political events, including performances by Jimmy Buffett and Gloria Estefan, and a 1972 campaign rally for Richard Nixon. The facility has remained largely closed since 1992, when it sustained significant damage during Hurricane Andrew. Despite being listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, the site currently sits fenced off and covered in graffiti.
