Miastko Municipal Hospital faces scandal over unauthorized surgeries

The Miastko Municipal Hospital in Poland is facing a major scandal involving the suspension of its general surgery department and the performance of unauthorized procedures. Investigations reveal that between 2024 and 2025, the hospital suspended its surgical department ten times, citing force majeure and staff shortages.

During these formal suspension periods, neurosurgeons from the company Spine reportedly performed at least 458 procedures. These short spinal treatments were allegedly billed as full hospitalizations to increase revenue, despite patients being sent home shortly after the procedures.

The National Health Fund (NFZ) has imposed a 13.2 million PLN fine on the facility. The NFZ stated it was not informed of the department's suspensions. The Central Anticorruption Bureau (CBA) and the prosecutor's office are currently investigating the hospital for potential fraud and the falsification of medical documentation.
