Mica Miller death case gains attention via Netflix documentary
A new Netflix docuseries, ‘Death of the Pastor’s Wife’, has brought international attention to the 2024 death of Mica Miller, a 30-year-old worship leader from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Miller was found dead in a North Carolina state park, a death officially ruled a suicide. However, the documentary and her family highlight allegations of coercive control and domestic abuse involving her husband, John-Paul Miller, the former pastor of Solid Rock Church.
Mica Miller had reportedly sought police assistance regarding her safety and filed for divorce shortly before her death. While John-Paul Miller has not been charged in connection with her death, he has been indicted on federal charges for cyberstalking and making false statements to investigators. He has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial.
The case has sparked advocacy efforts in South Carolina to criminalize coercive control, seeking to expand the legal definition of domestic violence to include psychological, emotional, and financial abuse. Following the controversy, Solid Rock Church closed its doors, and the building was sold.
