Mica Miller death highlights coercive control and legislative gaps

Mica Miller, a singer and worship leader, died by suicide just two days after filing for divorce from her husband, Pastor John-Paul “JP” Miller. The death has drawn significant attention following a documentary detailing a seven-year period of alleged coercive control and dysfunction within their relationship.

Mica’s sister, Abigail Francis, has addressed public questions regarding why the family did not intervene in the marriage. Francis stated that the family was unaware of the full extent of the situation, noting that Mica did not reach out to them about the specific schemes or plots occurring within the relationship.

The tragedy has also highlighted legislative efforts such as “Mica’s Law,” a proposed measure intended to criminalize coercive control and expand the legal definition of domestic abuse. Although the law failed to pass, the family continues to advocate for victims of similar circumstances.
