William Jewell football player MicahJo Barnett dies after medical emergency

MicahJo Barnett, a 20-year-old running back for William Jewell College, has died following a medical emergency during the team’s season-opening football game against Fort Lewis College in Liberty, Missouri.

During the first quarter on August 29, 2026, Barnett scored a one-yard touchdown. Shortly after, he reportedly experienced a medical emergency on the sidelines, with some reports noting seizure-like symptoms. Emergency responders provided immediate assistance at Green Stadium before transporting him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The game was suspended and subsequently canceled. While the exact cause of death has not been publicly disclosed by the college or the family, the Clay County Coroner's office is expected to investigate. Barnett was a junior business administration student and a standout athlete who previously played for Liberty North High School.

William Jewell College and the local community have expressed profound grief, holding a vigil on the campus quad to honor his memory. A GoFundMe has been established to support his family with funeral costs.
