Michał Cieślak promoted to WBC cruiserweight world champion
The World Boxing Council (WBC) has promoted Michał Cieślak to full cruiserweight world champion. Cieślak, who previously held the interim title after defeating Jean Pascal in June 2025, was elevated following the WBC Board of Governors' decision to vacate the title after failed attempts to facilitate a fight between Noel Mikaelian and Jai Opetaia.
As part of this ruling, Cieślak is required to make a mandatory title defense against David Benavidez. The bout is reportedly scheduled for December 12, 2026, in Phoenix, Arizona.
Benavidez, who recently moved up from the light-heavyweight division, confirmed he does not intend to return to the 175lb weight class, stating he feels better at cruiserweight. His decision to remain in the division is expected to leave the WBC light-heavyweight title vacant, potentially allowing contenders such as Joshua Buatsi and Willy Hutchinson to fight for the full championship.
