Academy of Justice leadership dispute sparks protests and police intervention
A leadership dispute at the Academy of Justice (AWS) in Warsaw has escalated into physical confrontations and police intervention. Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek has dismissed Michał Sopiński from his position as Rector-Commander, citing political activity and irregularities. The Ministry maintains the decision is final and has appointed Sławomir Cudak to assume the duties of the rector.
Michał Sopiński contests the dismissal, arguing that the decision was not properly served in accordance with administrative procedures and remains protected by a Constitutional Tribunal injunction. During attempts by Prof. Cudak to enter the academy's headquarters, PiS lawmakers, including Maria Kurowska, staged protests and blocked access to the rector's office, leading to scuffles and the involvement of the police.
Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of the Law and Justice (PiS) party, arrived at the site to support the protest, describing the government's actions as ‘total lawlessness.’ He suggested the move against the academy is a precursor to potential actions against the Constitutional Tribunal. The Ministry of Justice has ordered the Academy's Senate to provide a schedule for electing a new rector by 2028.
