Michael Angel Alvarez: Former LA peace ambassador case dismissed

A federal judge dismissed the case against Michael Angel Alvarez, a former peace ambassador for the nonprofit Healing Urban Barrios, regarding charges of illegal body armor possession. The dismissal follows a ruling that a juvenile court finding involving a killing committed while Alvarez was a minor could not be classified as a violent felony conviction, which was the legal basis for the body armor restriction.

Alvarez, who worked as a gang interventionist in MacArthur Park, has claimed the prosecution was politically motivated and demonstrated a lack of understanding regarding community violence intervention. While he acknowledged past gang affiliation, he denied being a gang leader and stated he has committed no crimes since his 2024 release from prison.

Federal prosecutors have indicated they are considering an appeal of the dismissal. Separately, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office is pursuing a state-level case against Alvarez for the same body armor charge, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for October 27.
