Michael Jackson biopic 'Michael' tops box office as highest‑grossing biopic

The Michael Jackson biopic ‘Michael’, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring the singer’s nephew Jaafar Jackson, has earned $977 million worldwide, surpassing Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ ($975 million) to become the highest‑grossing biopic of all time. Distributed by Lionsgate in the United States and Universal in international markets, the film has generated about $370 million domestically and $607 million overseas, making it Lionsgate’s biggest box‑office success and the most profitable musical biopic, overtaking ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.

The film opened in April 2026 with a $217 million global opening weekend and has continued strong box‑office performance across markets such as the United Kingdom, France, Brazil, Japan and Russia, drawing it close to the $1 billion milestone. Production included $50 million in reshoots after the Jackson estate flagged a plot point, and critics have noted that the movie omits the later sexual‑abuse allegations against the pop star.
