Michael Blackson blames UGMC for misdiagnosis and profit‑first care
American‑Ghanaian comedian Michael Blackson publicly accused the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) after his 83‑year‑old mother died following a month of treatment in Accra. Blackson claimed the hospital repeatedly misdiagnosed his mother, recommended the most expensive treatments, and prioritized payment collection over patient care. He said staff showed little sympathy, contacted him only when bills were due, and that an employee asked for a tip when he went to identify the body.
Blackson alleged he spent roughly GH¢250,000 during his mother's final month and considered legal action, though he doubted the Ghanaian courts would resolve the case promptly. He labeled UGMC "the worst hospital in Ghana" and called for reforms to put patients’ lives ahead of profit.
