Michael Bracewell moves to casual contract for BBL opportunity
New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell has transitioned to a casual contract with New Zealand Cricket for the 2026-27 season. The 35-year-old decision allows him the flexibility to pursue franchise cricket opportunities, specifically targeting a stint in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) and New Zealand’s inaugural NZ20 competition.
Despite moving away from a central contract, Bracewell remains committed to the Blackcaps and will be available for national selection. He is expected to participate in the upcoming five-match T20I series against India starting October 22 in Christchurch. Bracewell, who now focuses exclusively on white-ball cricket, stated the opportunity was “too good to pass up” at this stage of his career.
Nick Kelly will replace Bracewell on the central contract list. Kelly, a top-order batter who made his New Zealand debut in March 2025, earns his first central contract following strong performances in ODI cricket and recent leadership roles in the T20I side.
