Michael Burry accelerates bets against AI bubble with new put options

Investor Michael Burry, known for predicting the 2008 financial crisis, has accelerated his timeline for a potential artificial intelligence market reversal. He is shifting from direct short positions to put options on key AI-linked stocks, including Nvidia, Palantir, Micron, and Nebius, to gain more cost-effective leverage. Burry suggests the AI bubble could burst sooner than his previous 2028 estimate, potentially as early as next summer.

Burry’s bearish stance is supported by research from Ares Management, which highlights the risks of an industry heavily reliant on unproven revenue streams and massive capital expenditures. Additionally, Acer CEO Jason Chen has noted that increasing production capacity in China may end the current memory chip shortage, adding cyclicality back to the market.

Separately, Bridgewater Associates has issued a warning regarding the social impact of AI. CEO Nir Bar Dea projects that AI could displace approximately 18% of the US workforce within five years if not properly regulated. To mitigate this, Bridgewater leadership has proposed a 35% tax on AI tokens to fund support for displaced workers. Furthermore, reports indicate that major tech companies like Microsoft and Meta face over $3 trillion in off-balance sheet AI-related liabilities.
