Michael Burry warns of $4.3 trillion AI debt risk
Investor Michael Burry has warned of a potential $3 trillion to $4.3 trillion debt risk tied to artificial intelligence infrastructure that could destabilize the global economy. Burry’s analysis focuses on the massive capital expenditures made by major technology firms, including Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta, and Oracle, to construct data centers essential for AI adoption.
According to Burry, these companies may be obscuring the true scale of their financial commitments through controversial accounting methods. He notes that firms can sign non-cancellable, long-term leases for data centers and disclose them only in footnotes, allowing them to keep these significant liabilities off their primary balance sheets until the facilities become operational.
Burry suggests that if AI growth fails to meet current high expectations, these companies might be forced to write down these massive investments, which could severely impact the profits of a sector with a combined valuation of approximately $13 trillion.
