Michael Cheika appointed NSW Waratahs head coach

Michael Cheika has been appointed as the head coach of the NSW Waratahs for the 2027 season. The move marks a return to Rugby Union for the 59-year-old, who previously led the Waratahs to a Super Rugby title in 2014.

Cheika will depart the Sydney Roosters at the conclusion of the 2026 NRL season. He joined the Roosters ahead of the 2026 campaign as a forwards coach and coaching specialist. Roosters coach Trent Robinson praised Cheika’s contribution to the club, noting his obvious knowledge and passion for coaching.

Cheika’s extensive coaching career includes stints as the head coach of the Australian Wallabies, where he led the team to a Rugby Championship title and a Rugby World Cup final in 2015, and as the head coach of Argentina. He will remain with the Roosters for the remainder of their current premiership campaign before beginning his new role with the Waratahs in November.
